Web Art vs. Web Design

Intro

Believe it or not, there are still folks out there using text-only browsers, and many more who don't have access to the high bandwidth visual content of today's web. In part, this section of my site is dedicated to them because I think that equal, or at least equivalent access, is important. But it is also here to prove a point. Web design is not art. Web design is expository. It attempts to impart information in an effective and engaging way. Web art, by contrast, is affective. It tries to evoke an emotional reaction and as such is not bound by the same demands of clarity. The border between the two is so gray as to be almost nonexistent, and yet the distinction is necessitated by a current crisis in web design. It all boils down to efficiency: Efficiency in bandwidth, efficiency in return on web site investment, and efficiency in user interactions.
